Blood flow in the brain is widely used as an indicator of neural activity in non-invasive brain imaging techniques such as fMRI. fMRI images are an important means of studying brain connectivity and disease. However, the exact relationship between neural activity and blood flow is still unclear. In order to better interpret what functional brain images are telling us, I examine the relationship between neural activity and blood volume in the context of subject behavior.

Inthinc markets a device which monitors driving behavior and gives the driver real time feedback. The Speed by Street department was in charge of creating and maintaining a speed limit database which could be accessed by the devices for speed monitoring. Along with a coworker, I established the methods of gathering speed data. I coordinated the focus of the department based on information received from other departments in the company. By the end of my time as supervisor, the department had grown to 20 people consisting of three teams and maintained a large nationwide speed limit database.

A main theme of Biomedical research is understanding how tissues interact with other biological material and with foreign objects. As an undergraduate, I volunteered in the Tissue Engineering Lab. I learned the basics of cell culture, including passaging, cryopreservation, and staining techniques. I created and characterized gels of varying stiffness to be used for cell culture. As a senior project, my group created a copolymer delivery system for silver nano-particles in order to overcome antibiotic resistance.
