Extensive communications work to highlight immigrants’ rights.Accomplishments• Employing my outgoing personality and drive to succeed I built relationships in various immigrantcommunities across Illinois and facilitated a strong connection between the ACLU and a wide swathe of immigrant communities throughout the state, resulting in swift and effective legal action when needed in regards to TRUST Act litigation and assisting ICE detainees in danger of COVID-19.• Increased community awareness of legal rights, through interviews on Fox 32 and Univision (in Spanish), ACLU podcasts and panel discussions, facilitating legal action on behalf of the community.• Expanded ACLU footprint into immigrant communities across Illinois that had not been previously engaged by the ACLU since they were not working in the immigrant’s rights realm and used partnerships that I had built up through over a decade of community engagement.

Legislative work in Springfield involved drafting and advocating for legislation (SB 3489). Community partnership/coalition building throughout Chicago to unite various impacted ethnic and religious communities. Legal education efforts for the community at weekly legal info sessions and bi-monthly legal clinics.Accomplishments• My efforts, working within the fast-paced brief five month legislative session of Illinoisincluded community organizing, drafting appropriate amendatory language, and advocating with politicians on both sides of the aisle, aided in the passing of SB 3489 in both the House and Senate during the 2018 legislative session and was signed by Gov. Rauner on 8-17.• As the sole attorney on staff, I successfully completed my work in all areas: legislative matters, providing legal advice to staff members and serving as one of the two Spanish speaking organizers by managing my time wisely and organizing myself well.

Ran a 4-year program for high school students that focused on an introduction to the American legal system. The course included instruction on the political system, framework of judicial system, constitutional law, civil and criminal law, public speaking and advocacy skills.Accomplishments• Organized an “Immigration Law” workshop for students and their families, engaging sixteen volunteerattorneys and successfully serving 30 families in completing emergency planning documents thatwould provide valuable support in the event that a parent were taken into ICE custody.• Increased community awareness through organizing a “Know Your Rights” workshop with 50+attendees. The end result being that families learned a lot of the same rights that their children had already been learning in my class and utilizing in their daily lives.

Coalition building with various non-profits throughout MALDEF’s 11 state Midwest Region, serving on task forces and boards.Accomplishments• Engaged in the Latino/a community of Illinois and collaborated extensively with a wide array ofcommunity groups in the areas of education, immigrant’s rights, worker’s rights and voting rights in order to draft, file, advocate for and got statewide bills passed in the Illinois legislature, including the Temporary Visitor’s Driver’s License.• As the Immigrants’ Rights Attorney for an 11 state region I drafted, researched, engaged community members in both English & Spanish and built rapport with clients in order to file Federal civil rights impact litigation. This included assisting in the drafting of a petition for a writ of certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court: Keller v. City of Fremont, No. 13-1043, 2014 WL 825180 (Feb. 26, 2014)• Testimony in front of the Illinois State Board of Education, and several local school boards, advocating for the legal rights of English language learners to have full access to language services in their schools.Staff AttorneyDrafting, research, client contact and federal litigation experience in the area of constitutional law and civil rights with knowledge of both federal and state local rules of civil procedure throughout the Midwest.
