The precipitation values from GCM output are on the coarse scale and often not able to correctly reflect future precipitation extremes. This could lead to an inadequate projection of design criteria based on precipitation extremes, e.g. when deriving intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) curves as applied in urban drainage design and flood hazard assessments. Therefore a parallel approach was adopted in which a relationship between dew point temperature and precipitation intensity was inferred from observed data. This relationship worked as a proxy and was used to predict precipitation values from GCM temperature projections. The European Earth system model – EC-Earth was used to generate future climate projections assuming the RCP8.5 emission scenario and retrieve projections for temperature and precipitation. Time series for the period of 1950-2100 were used and pooling of a 16 member initial condition ensemble was done in order to account for the inherent internal variability of the climate system leading to uncertainty in the GCM data. The advanced delta change method was used for time series transformation. Based on the projections from both approaches - GCM downscaling and Temperature scaling, IDF curves were determined and hydrological model runs were conducted to assess the impact of different methods to address future precipitation extremes. Variations in IDF curves and differences in hydrological model output were studied to compare these two approaches. Show less
