Clinical Lead, Learning & Development
My work at Genix Healthcare’s Head Office in Leeds is a delightful blend of my various experiences in clinical dentistry and training-learning-and-development. As a science transfer lead, I get to shape the clinical progress at Genix Healthcare with insights from research literature and clinical practice, maximising revenue generation and reducing costs in the process. The ‘training-learning’ domain of my work at Genix involves help the organisation grow by identifying key areas of learning and expansion. I collate and analyse training needs, design training plans, and facilitate their delivery and assessment. Writing training content is a bonus that I truly enjoy! The much broader ‘development’ domain of my work here involves collaborating with various organisational functions, especially with operations. This includes weighing in on clinical protocols, new procedures to add to the clinicians’ repertoire, latest materials and equipment and refinement of patient care. I work closely with the Operations Director and Operations Manager. I even get to exercise my research muscles organising mini clinical trials to inform Genix’s decision-making. I'm part of a core clinical team that handles clinical queries from our clinicians, nurses, and treatment coordinators. After operations, my next major contribution is to marketing, working closely with the Head of Marketing to provide clinical inputs for strategies and messages. I dabble in copywriting and copyediting, and sometimes star in marketing videos—though I’m still getting used to my newfound fame!On the procurement and facilities front, I help rationalise expansion decisions and purchases, especially of clinical equipment, materials and consumables. These can range from something as small as drape kits and composites to high-elaboration articles like implants and dental chairs. I also collaborate with recruitment for clinical interviews and ensure new hires are up to speed.Every day at Genix is an adventure!
Director, Lead Dentist And Periodontist
Dental Trends is a collaborative effort between my wife, Anita Karwa-Karnik, and me. We are both dental specialists, with qualifications that complement each other's. The primary focus at Dental Trends is comprehensive dental care. The practice places a special emphasis on restorative dentistry, including prosthodontics, periodontics and conservative dentistry. The team at Dental Trends comprises devoted dental specialists and a caring support staff. With scrupulous asepsis and attention to the minutest detail, long term oral health of the patients is always the first priority at Dental Trends. In due course of time, Anita and I aim to impart the wealth of clinical knowledge we have acquired in our practice over the years to our fellow dentists. Dental Trends also serves as my observatory for human behaviour. It allows me to study the choices patients make when facing unavoidable versus elective decisions related to dental treatment. A part of my scientific enquiry in the effects of message framing and choice architecture on decision making happens here. Fun place to be!Some highlights of my work here:* Delivery of comprehensive multi-disciplinary oral care to 800+ patients with a focus on quality and safety* Presentation of oral health education to 90% of total patient pool, imparting training in home care and toothbrushing* Creating and implementing office protocols and procedures with efficiency as the core value* Management of human resources overseeing a team of five dental specialists and three dental assistants* Coordinating operations, public relations and online presence
Consultant
My work with Cipla includes consulting to provide product and/or marketing insights based on identifying the relevant scientific and industry trends, and conducting sessions with the medical representatives of the organisation to familiarise them with the practical aspects of dentistry.
Consulting Periodontist And Oral Implantologist
As a consulting periodontist and oral implant specialist, my work at Dr Kiran Thakare’s dental office has been highly specific: to manage the periodontal aspect of dental care in patients who require complex oral rehabilitation. In addition, I have been instrumental in creating a roadmap for the direction in which dentistry at Sparkle Dental Care must head. My role here has focused on:* Diagnosis and planning of complex multi-disciplinary cases requiring full-mouth rehabilitation* Communicating the value of long-term oral health with patients of dental wear related to bruxism and gastro-oesophageal reflux
Director
This project represents my first foray into the corporate world. My work here involved creating an efficient training program for the doctors that join IKS as scribes. My primary role here was to serve as the medical content expert. This work challenged me intellectually in two realms: 1) using science to find the most appropriate teaching methodology that will help my trainees learn more effectively, and 2) using my medical know-how and combing it with the art of presenting crisp content. I had fun exploring which hypotheses from the science of learning turn out to be valid when it comes to translating theory into practice.
Associate Professor
An extension of my duties as an assistant professor at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai, my work as an associate professor in periodontology involved didactic instruction in periodontology and oral implantology to undergraduate and postgraduate students. As before, I continued to be involved in clinical and non-clinical research, published papers and handled administrative academics. Also as in the past, the high points while working at this post were when I got to interact with students to mentor them in research, academic writing and clinical periodontology. I focused my attention on being a periodontist in the broad context of restorative dentistry. Most importantly, it was at this time that I went deeper in my enquiries about the effects of behavioural attributes on decision making and dug into the science of message framing by taking upon some copywriting projects. Some of my more salient duties included:* Peer review of three master’s dissertations* Contribution to and critical analysis of five research papers* Evaluation and supervision of clinical and laboratory research projects as a member of scientific review committee with a focus on study design
Assistant Professor
With primary focus on didactics, clinical demonstrations and instructions, the assistant professor's post at Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Dental College and Hospital, Navi Mumbai also gave me many opportunities to be involved in research. My presentation skills were kept sharp and focused thanks to my responsibilities related to teaching, supervising and examining undergraduate and graduate students in my subject, periodontology. Interacting with students was the most joyous aspect of my work here. I also learned the workings of a hierarchical organisation, contributing to the administrative aspects of academia as and when necessary. I published papers while working here, and worked on improving my clinical and academic repertoire. My work during this tenure included:* Peer review of 11 master’s dissertations* Study designing, data analysis and copyediting for 17 research projects
