Mik Patel Email and Phone Number
For almost three years, I worked with Dr. Graham Sazama at Lawrence University synthesizing a stable, luminescent radical. I also conducted research in organic synthesis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through the NSF REU program. Although I have extensive experience in organic synthesis, my interests lie in materials chemistry with a broad focus on making electronic materials, studying their quantum mechanical properties, and applying them in practical contexts.

Graduate StudentUniversity Of Minnesota Aug 2020 - PresentMinneapolis, Minnesota, United StatesSynthesized monodisperse colloidal metal oxide nanocrystals, as well as organic and inorganic dyes. Used SAXS, XRD, TEM, STEM-EDS to characterize the nanocrystals. Used NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis, emission spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry to characterize the dyes. Performed analytical experiments to characterize the binding of the dyes on the surface of the nanocrystals using Langmuir adsorption isotherms and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to observe electron and energy dynamics in dye-nanocrystal systems. The systems studied have applications in photovoltaics and quantum information sciences. -
Research AssistantLawrence University Jun 2017 - Aug 2020Appleton, WiConducted research with Dr. Graham Sazama at Lawrence University. We sought to advance knowledge of doublet state photophysics through synthesis and analysis of a stable, luminescent radical. The target molecule, BDAA, is an incorporation of a known chromophore, anthracene, into the structure of a known, stable, radical, BDPA, to make a stable, luminescent radical. My contribution to this project is expected to yield 1 first-author publication. -
Nsf Reu FellowUniversity Of Wisconsin-Madison May 2019 - Jul 2019Madison, Wisconsin AreaConducted research with Dr. Robert McMahon at the University of Wisconsin-Madison through the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). Synthesized molecules of astrochemical and rotational relevance, meaning that they are primarily composed of carbons and nitrogens, are volatile and have a permanent dipole. My contributions during the 10-week program resulted in 3 publications.
