Research Assistant

Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada

I continued my work with TRU while slowly growing the transportation initiative of the office. I was allowed to pursue my passion with e-bikes and drive initiatives to support cyclists at the university. As this position has no formal job description, I had the freedom to help around the office in all projects that were coming through the office in areas like: campus planning, events coordination, project bids, purchasing plans, research, data analysis, reporting, energy management, volunteer coordination, policy review, data collection, and of course the STARS report. The 2018 STARS report was the first platinum rating TRU achieved in recognition of the hard work that we had accomplished in the office bringing meaningful change to all aspects of sustainability around campus. I helped write this report and contributed to many of the sections, though I did not officially become co-author until the following report in 2021. These reports work to recognize sustainability in a comprehensive manner in an academic institution, for further reading about the STARS reports see https://www.aashe.org/

The course is a fourth-year level course in the Natural Resource Science program where students focus on land and resource use policies and laws, and their development and administration in British Columbia, particularly as affected by aboriginal rights and title. The course provides an overview of specific land and resource policies in British Columbia, illustrates the policy cycle through teaching the fundamentals of strategic land and resource use planning, and introduces the practice of policy analysis.

Co-Op

Kamloops, Bc

For my second co-op work term I joined the Environment and Sustainability office at TRU. I worked on a large variety of projects including biomass boilers, corporate sustainability partnerships, the composting program, alternative energy initiatives, software to promote sustainability, campus outreach programs, and helping ensure sustainable goals are reached during renovations and planning. My largest project was working on the university's sustainability tracking system, and on-line system that has qualitative and quantitative data so we can easily monitor aspects of sustainability such as: energy use, waste and recycling, food purchasing, composting, transportation, and many other areas.

Sep 2016 - Aug 2017

Knowledge And Technology Transfer

Agassiz, Bc

My position as Knowledge and Technology Transfer was primarily focused on the application of newly developed best practices sourced from the farm locally and other research farms around the world. This involved the creation of education programs through infographics and description of best practices sourced directly from research journals. In addition to my regular duties, I also operated as a scientific photographer for a few projects around the farm, data collection for long-term atmospheric research project, and the general photography and data collection of various small research projects around the farm. One of the most interesting projects I worked on was the measurement of environmental data at vineyards around the lower mainland. I used GPS equipment to record data for GIS in additional to on-site soil measurements and other physical measurements like slope angle and direction for a larger research project from the Okanagan research farm.
