This was my dissertation thesis, a fruut of labor and stress. I couldn't possibly attempt to summarize it but here goes a brief introduction - Literature is a reflection and imitation of the society and the society is influenced and inspired by its literature. Literature has an anti-thesis effect on the society, cinema being an integral part of our significant culture, that includes the literary domain, influences and changes the way we think and even molds our perspective. The media we, as a society at large, consume is highly suggestive of not only the audience to whom it directed and catered but also of the society whose reflection this literature is meant to be. Analyzing such narratives reveals the inherent stereotypes of a heteronormative, patriarchal and misogynist society. With this research it is my aim to decipher such stereotypes as witnessed in the portrayal of female characters in horror movies, specifically movies that deal with possession and exorcism. This dissertation has its focus on the cinematic representation of the ritualistic practice of Exorcism through an anthropological understanding and a psychoanalytical approach. The thesis attempts to garner a socio-cultural understanding of the stereotypical roles which this genre of performative literature portrays its women in. It proposes to look at the process of exorcism from various dimensions in order to comprehend it through a broader framework.
