The course was offered in a blended format between October 5th and December 2nd, 2022 with a totalworkload of 180 hours. The Smart Sensing School has been organized as part of the ide3a project, the international alliance for digital e-learning, e-mobility and e-research in academia (https://ide3a.net).First part of the course was an online 6-day school including lectures and exercises on state-of-the-artresearch on critical urban infrastructure systems and the use of sensors and communication technologies to improve their management and operations, along with implications of privacy, data uncertainty, and rebound effects. Practical workshops/trainings on simulation of renewables-powered edge computing, sensitivity analysis, and soft-skills on how to work with and present scientific papers and design thinking complemented the program. The school program included international speakers from the ide3a partner universities and other international institutions.Second part of the Smart Sensing Course was the Smart City Hackathon in Berlin. The participantsteamed up in international and interdisciplinary groups to solve a challenge related to critical urbaninfrastructure systems and digitalization. Ahmed Badra was part of the group Green Impact Crew thatdeveloped a solution to the challenge "BGI_placement: Channel your inner planner! Retrofitting with optimized BGIs".
