About Dmitry Abbakumov, Phd

I currently work as a 'Psychometrician-in-Residence' with various EdTech projects worldwide. In this role, I join each project's team for one to two quarters. My job is to use special methods from psychometrics and data science to reveal and solve problems in how people learn, how they stay interested in the course, and how effective the product is. I directly work with the teams to make these improvements. My efforts have led to better marketing, improved products, better learning content, and stronger support for students (refer to www.abbakumov.com for details). Previously, I worked as the Chief Psychometrician at TripleTen, an online coding bootcamp operating in the Americas, and in the EdTech unit of Yandex, a prominent tech company. Prior to this, I led psychometrics and learning analytics for a Coursera Project at the leading university in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. I hold a PhD in Methodology of Educational Sciences and Statistical Modeling from KU Leuven, a prestigious university renowned as Europe's most innovative.

This tool detects parts of theory and practice that are overly difficult (or too easy) for learners and require optimization. As a result, content teams know exactly where to allocate resources effectively.Learning Performance Tracker. This tool identifies learners who require additional learning support in real-time, which can be provided either through automated means or by a human instructor. The technology helps support and tutoring teams work efficiently by addressing evident problems.Mastery Depth Tracker. This tool measures the level of confidence with which a learner engages in each studied skill and highlights skills that could benefit from extra practice. The tracker helps students achieve robust results and gain certainty in the skillset they acquire.

    The non-profit lab worked in 2019/20 academic year and brought together scholars and experts in psychometrics, machine learning, and educational sciences from HSE University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Coursera, and Pearson to create an explanatory psychometric network of difficulties and problems of digital learners. The resulting network relates a certain difficulty, for instance, a specific set of mistakes in an assessment, to learners’ previous experience in a course. It shows course developers whether the difficulty is systematic, for instance, content-driven, or just a random one. The psychometric network may serve as an intellectual helper for course developers aimed at improving digital content and providing learners’ the best learning experience. As a product of this project, we prepared a research paper (under review now) and presented it at the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society.

    I worked in the Methodology of Educational Sciences Research Group supervised by prof. dr. Wim Van den Noortgate. Our research on big logged data in massive open online courses (MOOCs) resulted in development of approaches for measuring proficiency through summative and formative assessments, tracking growth in proficiency, measuring and predicting learners' activity, and understanding effects of interest on performance in assessments. The results were reported multiple times at the International Meeting of the Psychometric Society and the Coursera Partners Conference. They were published in Behavior Research Methods, Applied Measurement in Education, Psychologica Belgica, and Heliyon.
