My programming experience dates back to the late 80's where I took part in an introductory course in GFA-Basic. After that came a longer break until the mid 90's where I started doing web-development.I wrote the first professional-type web application in the late 90's which had (at the time) novel features. Which included inter-user operations to share data over the web.The work and satisfaction of the users hurled me into another web-project which initially looked like a small project that could be finished in 2-3 months. However, in the first meeting it became immediately apparent that this was something bigger as the project included a very large database. During this time I learned a lot about Database design and management.This is still a project I maintain in my spare time and the project is currently undergoing a major re-design as the focus of the application is shifting strongly towards the database, and away from the user-interface.In Summer 2002 hosting the service on a server without proper shell and database access became too limiting and we switched over to something bigger. Now the service is hosted on one dedicated Linux server and this may soon increase to three dedicated servers. This, and running my own Linux machines at home for fun have given me a deep understanding of Linux.My Linux experiences date back to 1999 with the release of Suse 6.3. But managing and installing Gentoo servers made me leap forward tremendously. This is due to the fact that the Gentoo installation is very low-level and to get it done right, you need to understand the system. Which is a good thing! Next to my personal experience with Suse and Gentoo, I have a lot professional experience with RedHat and Debian.
