I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN DRIVEN BY FOOD.As a child - according to my mother - meal time was my favorite time of the day. Except for a brief aversion to red food, I would try anything. I started my first food business in middle school. I roped my friend into helping me make home-made pasta which we sold at a street party in my hometown. My mother did not appreciate us drying pasta all over the living room.My indirect career path led me through field biology, journalism and a little marketing before deciding to pursue my dream: run a farm business that sells its end product. In December of 2003, I opened Sugarsnap, a small farm in the Intervale and a take-out cafe on Riverside Avenue. From about 1,000 square feet, we cooked and sold fresh take-out meals and started doing some catering. Over the past 18 years, I have taken Sugarsnap from that small storefront to become the largest off-premise caterer in the Burlington area. I led the move (and financing) to a 5,000 square foot space and the addition of 2 more cafes. I also led the change of the business model to a complete focus on catering. My experience has led me to a deep understanding of the value of persistence, teamwork, strategic focus and cashflow. Specialties: Small scale farming, food business creation, cooking and food processing, growing a small business, small business strategy, socially responsible business, business partnerships

South Burlington, Vermont
I founded Sugarsnap in 2003 as a small prepared foods retail store in Burlington, Vermont. Over the years, I have lead the business through adaptation and growth. In 2024, we are now the leading off-premise catering company in northern Vermont with two exclusive venues several hundred events over the year, including weddings, corporate events and more.

We have hosted three young entrepreneurs from Suriname, El Salvador and Paraguay (respectiviely) at Sugarsnap for month-log fellowships. In addition, I traveled to Suriname for 2 weeks in 2019 for a reverse exchange.
Burlington, VT
I left Gardener's Supply and entered what I considered a self designed graduate program. My end goal was to open a business with a farm in the Intervale that sold the farm's end product. To this end, I attended business workshops, spent a season working for Golden Russet Farm (an organic vegetable farm in Shoreham, Vermont), spent a winter in Costa Rica.
Worked to integrate robust gardening content into all aspects of the company's communication. This included writing and editing customer success profiles, how-to garden features, e-mail newsletters and more. I was able to combine my love of plants and gardening with my journalism experience. But I wanted to get out of the office and build a business myself.
I reported and wrote stories for a daily newspaper. I primarily covered a "Towns" beat, meaning I was responsible for covering part of Chittenden County outside of Burlington. I wrote about a wide range of topics including local politics, higher education, crime, environmental issues and recreation. I learned how to organize myself, synthesize information.
