In elementary school, my parent-teacher conferences would always sound something along the lines of “Abbey is a pleasure to have in class…and is very talkative.” Ever since then, I’ve been a passionate, conversational yet professional student and employee who is active, eager and engaged. After being a Varsity Dance Captain, Chorus Vice President, Forensics Captain and an Officer in National Honors Society, all within my senior year of high school, I switched my interests over to financial literacy. The skills I learned from those positions have carried into what I do now.Working as a Tax Preparer at Hasenberg Financial Group this spring, I’ve been able to learn about something that applies to everyone, but most know little about; doing your own taxes. I’ve enjoyed using my knowledge base to make client’s financial lives better, and to form a personal connection in the process. I’ve also been accepted into an opportunity to manage two separate real-money investment portfolios totaling ~$400,000, being lead by a Professor that previously worked on Wall Street. These new learning experiences have allowed me to form stronger networks and to engage in class discussion with familiar faces surrounding me. Having previously worked in healthcare during the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic and severe ongoing nursing shortage, I took away a plethora of social skills that I have continued to apply in my daily life. Putting my health at risk to help patients heal takes patience, kindness, and intelligence/proper management of medical technology. Working in the ER, ICU, and other critical areas during such a hard time has taught me communication skills that allow me to properly and calmly convey information under any stressful situation.My goal is to help others. I’ve seen what proper, applicable knowledge of financial literacy can do for me, and I plan to continue utilizing my compassion, focus, and leadership experience to serve my community.
