During my time in the learning disability and autism service I worked as part of a supportive, multi-disciplinary team committed to developing a service which put the customer at the forefront of our practice. Due to the nature of the role I was required to have well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and creatively with individuals where there were often barriers to communication present. I had to ensure that my knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and guidance related to working with and safeguarding vulnerable adults remained up to date to ensure I was best positioned to promote the rights and wellbeing of my service users. As part of my role I undertook Care and Support Assessments in line with the Care Act (2014), completed Mental Capacity Assessments, managed and assessed risk, put together care packages as well as many other responsibilities that I took on as part of my role to ensure I strived for the best possible outcomes for my service users.

Within this role I supported the service users, promoted their individuality, identity, rights, choice, privacy, independence, dignity and respect through informed choice. Some of my main responsibilities within this role included ensuring I was always working in line with company policies, procedures and values, responding to the specific needs of the individual service users including supporting with personal care, domestic tasks, maintaining their home, supporting with finances and promoting their education surrounding budgeting, promoting a healthy lifestyle, food hygiene and other areas of day to day living as needed. I was also required to complete and maintain written records as well as develop and implement individual care and person centred support plans. This job gave me the opportunity to develop countless skills and advocate for my service users to ensure their rights were promoted and their needs and wishes were heard.

During this placement I was able to build up my own case load at Child in Need level as well as having the opportunity to co-work some more complex cases with other members of staff within my team which enabled me to obtain and develop my skills in working with and supporting families from varying backgrounds. Towards the end of my placement I was also able to arrange and chair Child in Need meetings with the families on my case load. In addition, my general responsibilities and expectations as a student social worker were to complete Child in Need visits to see the children within the organisations expected time frames, to complete direct work with children to ascertain their wishes and feelings about their lives and personal circumstances, and to complete and keep accurate case recordings and notes for any work I completed while on placement.

During this placement my role involved assisting support workers and recovery workers with any administration duties as appropriate as well as completing initial and comprehensive assessments, working with the outreach team, working with colleagues in therapeutic groups and assisting in needle exchange all whilst maintaining client confidentiality.
