Orkney Ferries operate a fleet of ten vessels between the islands in Orkney. My role at Orkney Ferries as Marine Administrative Officer works closely with the Marine Superintendents to ensure the smooth operation of sailings seven days a week. My responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Assisting the Marine Superintendents with support to efficiently implement our Safety Management System (SMS), oversea vessel and crew certification and organise revalidation as necessary, review company policies and procedures and update as necessary, and provide training onboard the vessels and within the office when required. My most recent projects at Orkney Ferries has been assisting the move from a paper, to paperless system for all sea-going business, providing training for office based staff in relation to Dangerous Goods, and researching the transportation of electric vehicles onboard ro-ro passenger ferries.

Northlink Ferries operate one passenger ship between Orkney and Mainland Scotland, two between Shetland, Orkney and Aberdeen, and two freight ships between Shetland, Orkney and Aberdeen. My role included, but was not exclusive to; taking bookings over the phone, email and website live chat; taking payments using an online secure payment system; issuing refunds through a pin-pad, and PayPal; acting as a member of the disruptions team; regularly updating freight bookings with trailer numbers, temperatures, and commodity codes; accept dangerous goods for shipping and input into bookings; notify the vessels of what livestock, dangerous goods and cargo is travelling each day; work with freight coordinators to ensure freight space is allocated equally between haulage companies; liaise with lairage staff in different ports to ensure the correct livestock containers are available when required; contact livestock customers to advise if the weather is safe for their animals to travel; produce invoices for livestock bookings; manage employee training for new recruits on a three-month introductory period, while offering continuing guidance, advice and mentorship; and using various software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook as well as specifically designed software for Northlink such as their booking system, lost and found system, and online chat service.
