I currently work as an Environmental Lab Analyst in the analytical chemistry department at the University of Iowa State Hygienic Laboratory. In this position I perform various EPA methods to extract out specific analytes in client samples for pesticides, herbicides, and volatile/semi-volatile compounds. I also perform various EPA analytical tests in which the extracted samples are injected into instruments and analyzed by liquid and gas chromatography. I also work in the radiochemistry department where I perform various EPA methods to prepare environmental samples (water, soil, and vegetation) for gross alpha/beta, radon, tritium, radium, and strontium analyses. These radionuclides require differing instrumentation for quantification, including gas proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters, gamma spectrometers, and alpha spectrometers. In addition to sample preparation and instrumentation I also have extensive experience in reagent preparation and use of lab equipment (such as pipetting). Prior to my current position, I worked in the air quality department at the State Hygienic Laboratory where I traveled to DNR air quality network sites across the state of Iowa to collect air filter samples and perform routine maintenance on air samplers, while also reviewing and analyzing continuous data.
