Advisor: Markus Kalkum My predoctoral research is focused on using a multi-omics strategy to study the dynamic mechanisms of complex biology in different microorganisms. My thesis focuses on studying the mechanisms that contribute to the immunomodulatory function of probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri by using the proteomics and metabolomics approaches. ew identified the formation of the novel folate in L. reuteri, and my project goal is to investigate the mechanism that leads to this novel compound. My other project involved in the collaboration with NASA/JPL to investigate the the changes of proteome of different microorganisms that have been either isolated directly and sent to the international space station. Our goal is to use to the proteomic approach to determine the mechanisms that are affected by microgravity and enhanced radiation. I believe the results from my research will have major impact on the knowledge of how probiotics benefit its host as well as how microorganisms acquire its virulence characteristics through adapting the extreme environmental conditions.

Advisor: Michael Harrington My research projects have involved evaluating of potential biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease screening, analyzing nutritional treatment for Alzheimer’s patients, and looking for the potential triggers for migraine using a migraine rat and mutant mouse model. I was responsible for performing tests on clinical samples in order to find the most sensitive and/or specific biomarkers for screening purposes. In the rat migraine study, I was designed and conducted animal and molecular experiments in supporting the hypothesis.

Advisor: Fabrizio Billi The main objectives of the lab’s research involve evaluating the degradation products of orthopedic implants from different materials, and studying the relationship between such products and implant failures. My work focused on analyzing the debris from orthopedic wear with different particle extraction protocols and scanning electron microscope. I also worked on the independent project to analyze the correlation between the wear rate and the isolated particles from orthopedic wear simulators.
