Research student in Dr. Justin Brown's Neuroscience Lab. Our lab studied the effects of chemical agonists and antagonists on the function of serotonin receptors in the Raphe Palidus of murine model brains when in hypoxia. Cranial and abdominal surgeries were performed to insert a thermoprobe and cannula in the murine model. The thermoprobe allowed for the model's core temperature to be measured; depending on the drug being administered through the cannula, we could measure the drugs effect on serotonin receptors through the decrease or maintenance of the core temperature when in a hypoxic environment. To confirm the agonists and antagonists were injected into the proper location, histological analyses performed on the brain. Data analysis was continuously done to update the results as more experiments were added to the database. All procedures and animal care were overlooked by specific committees and a specific SOPs.
