About Abby Anderson

I use mathematical tools to understand the world around me, combining my love of research and knowledge mobilization to create opportunities for a better tomorrow.I began my career in mathematical biology at the Memorial University of Newfoundland through an NSERC USRA research grant. Every time I went to a conference, I found myself thinking, "I didn't know you could use math to do THAT!". My passion for ecological research only grew as I worked on an original spruce budworm diffusion-advection-reaction model with Dr. Olga Vasilyeva. Then in my MSc at the University of Guelph, my knowledge expanded to include epidemiological research. In collaboration with my supervisor, Dr. Hermann Eberl, I used both traditional mathematical techniques and data analysis to gain insights on the dynamics present in my innovative disease model. The insights gained from my work can help predict which intervention strategies would be most effective in controlling the spread of nosema disease in Western honeybee colonies. As I continue my career post-graduation, I continue to find myself most drawn to positions in healthcare and environmental fields. Through interdisciplinary research and a wide array of volunteer activities, I have become a skilled researcher and communicator. My critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills not only enable effective data analysis, but also the ability to understand what people want and exceed expectations by utilizing creativity and innovation. My desire to collaborate allows me to guide teams to work together in the service of the greater good. I’m passionate about using my skills to create positive, tangible impacts. I feel most excited when thinking about what roles provide opportunities for research, innovation, data analytics, and communication of results to a broader audience.To maintain a healthy work-life balance, I have a wide array of hobbies, activities, and interests. I love being in the outdoors whenever I can, whether that's through hiking, camping, skating, or skiing (I think I see the connection between this interest and my research!). Since moving to Kitchener-Waterloo, I have been taking Latin dance classes through the University of Waterloo's Mambo Club. I'm also passionate about activism in the LGBTQ2SIA+ community, so much of my volunteer experience and projects are related to LGBTQ2SIA+ topics and intersectionality.
