As a Peer Assisted Leader tutor for the Academic Success Center at Clemson University, my job is to help students master difficult course material by leading group tutoring sessions which encourage developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills and peer collaboration. I lead group tutoring sessions two evenings a week for the Business Calculus I course. I attend the classes every week as a way to keep up the material taught and connect with the students and professors in the classroom. To prepare for each session, I find strategies to help the students understand the material by preparing practice problems, creating worksheets, and making activities with the goal of encouraging collaboration within the sessions. The aim is to get students thinking and problem-solving rather than being told to answer. The guided discussions give students a direction and they can determine what information they need to work on. In addition, the small group interactions lead to better communication skills and friendships among the students involved.This role has required utilizing skills such as adaptability, communication, and leadership. I prepare a session plan before each session, but I must be able to flexible and adapt my strategy to the student’s needs. My role also requires the skills of public speaking and facilitating. I must be able to communicate my session plan to the students, asking effective questions, and efficiently help the students understand the material. There is also a strong emphasis on leadership in my role. While I am a peer to the students, I help encourage, motivate, and gain them confidence in their abilities. It is important spend time making sure the students understand the concepts and feel comfortable working them on their own.Overall, this role has helped me grow as a student and prepare me for my future goals.
