About Abby Kinch, Ph.D.

Following an enlistment in the U.S. Air Force as an Airborne Chinese Cryptologic Linguist, Dr. Abby Kinch worked for six years in the private sector using the language and analysis skills the Air Force provided until ultimately deciding to complete her undergraduate degree in Chinese and Linguistics. In 2013, Dr. Kinch completed her first master’s degree and was named a Presidential Management Fellow. She then developed the U.S. Intelligence Studies Certificate at Florida State University within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, writing the two core courses and creating as well as teaching an impressive line-up of analysis coursework, including qualitative, quantitative, and network analyses techniques. In this role, Dr. Kinch established a coordinated program with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Florida Intelligence Center, and Florida Fusion Center, allowing her students real-world analytic experience. Dr. Kinch holds a doctoral degree in Public Administration and Policy from Florida State University, specializing in strategy and strategic management, and has written and presented on on both the strategic security management of Central Asia and the Xinjiang province of China and the strategic service to veterans in higher education, focusing on the inclusion of the intersectional identities of the population. She is now an adjunct instructor for the University of South Florida's Master of Science in Intelligence Studies analysis coursework and is working in an executive role in the nonprofit sector serving our nation’s veterans. She continues to use her analytic skills to understand salient issues facing the population at home.

Intelligence Studies program development including the research, writing, development, and instruction of new intelligence coursesIn the time since the development of the initial three courses, I have developed four additional courses: (1) The advanced intelligence analysis course delves heavily into structured analytic techniques as applied to real-world problems. (2) The applied analytic techniques course was created in conjunction with the Florida Intelligence Center’s goal of advanced formal instruction of analysts, where students use open-sources to answer key intelligence questions provided by the FIC. (3) The national security statistics course focuses on the analysis of “big data” or use of large datasets, to include the National K-12 School Shooting Database, the Profiles of Individuals Radicalized in the United States dataset, and the Global Terrorism Database, to answer student-formed intelligence questions with a domestic focus. This course focuses primarily on interpretation of results, but includes instruction on modelling and gaming accompanied by a discussion on the implication of bias in models. (4) Finally, a more post-modernist course examines the narrative elements in the Spy Fiction genre to investigate its effects on public opinion of U.S. intelligence. A final course, writing for intelligence and national security, with instruction in plain language writing, message-driven formatting, and the ethics of writing, was prepared, but not implemented.Instructing and mentoring students in Emergency Management and Homeland Security, Intelligence, and Professional Development.
