Aided in the start up of a new pathology lab. Wrote various policies, made decisions on supplies, equipment, new LIS pathology module, and overall workflow. Implemented numerous items/methods to create more efficient processes.Daily histology duties include: accessioning specimens, embedding, cutting, manually staining/coverslipping slides for H&E, and special stains. Using appropriate controls, antibodies, and detection kits on IHC staining platform. Keeping lab equipment clean and maintained. Sending out slides/blocks to other facilities for additional testing and maintaining inventory of all sent out specimens.Other duties include: troubleshooting issues with staining/equipment/LIS, answering phone calls/resolving issues related to specimens/reports, ordering of all supplies, providing on the job training to new histotechs, creating schedules for staff, scheduling biohazard and chemical waste pickup as needed, calling service tech support as needed, maintaining records of QC documentation and maintenance forms for all equipment. Helped lab become CAP accredited by going through checklist items and ensuring compliance through policy editing, and appropriate documentation/record keeping. Maintained CAP accreditation throughout each inspection and self-inspection.

Histology:• Process/embed/cut surgical patient tissues in a timely manner• Use computer/scanning system to track patient blocks, slides, etc.• Maintain and troubleshoot all machines/equipment• Organize all specimens according to case number/letter to ensure quick pulling of materials for further testing/researchElectron microscopy:• Process and embed specimens into resin with appropriate size and orientation• Prepare solutions for processing including alcohols, osmium, and resin components• Maintain processor and troubleshoot errors/hand process when machine is down• Make glass knives for thick sectioning• Cut muscle, kidney, heart, cilia, and platelet thick sections and stain with tol blue• Thin section using diamond knife and place onto grids• Stain grids with uranyl acetate and lead citrate, then place into electron microscope• Take photos on electron microscope of pathology/morphologyNeuropathology: • Freeze muscle biopsies in isopentane/liquid nitrogen and cryo-section• Perform and QC panel of enzyme histochemistry stains incl. COX, SDH, NADH, Oil Red O, ATPase, etc., and immunohistochemistry stains incl. FITC and C4D• Maintain up-to-date specimen log book • Regularly make up numerous solutions and maintain stain line • Embed and cut autopsy brain tissues and stainSummary of nontechnical responsibilities for all three departments:• Ensure chemicals are correctly labeled according to CAP policies• Research and create appropriate GHS (Globally Harmonized System) labels for chemicals• Communicate results of histological stains to pathologists, discuss issues, and work with colleagues and management to ensure issues get resolved• Research different procedures for stains and run tests, presenting results to pathologist for feedback and suggestions• Actively participate in discussions with management for ideas of improvements/increased efficiency • Answer biopsy and equipment questions from outside clients
