Most of the year, I am a student and get to exercise my love of learning every day (yes, I do read research articles for fun because I’m a nerd and like to know how things work). My work as a health sciences and Spanish major has taught me anatomy, team-based care, communication, and much more. Of course, my role as a student directly impacts my progress toward my future goal of becoming a physical therapist, but other parts of my life have also led me on my journey to becoming a PT. Over my past four summers as a sales floor associate at Gazelle Sports, I help people of all backgrounds find comfortable shoes. Through this role I have learned to appreciate the role of flexible thinking and strengthened my communication and customer care skills. Part of the original reason I chose to work at Gazelle Sports was my love for running and being active. I am currently a member of the Butler University cross-country/track and field team, but I enjoy hiking, biking, and camping in my free time, too. Being active has taught me more skills that will be helpful as I go through my PT education and career such as body awareness, the value of quality rehab, and how to balance outcome goals and a process focus.Goals have always been a part of my success. My friends who know me from teams and classes would describe me as dedicated and someone who stands for what I believe. I like achieving goals, but I like to achieve them the “right” way so I can get the most out of the experience. So, I invest a lot of time and effort into reaching my goals.One of the goals I have had for a while is to be a PT. While I spend time learning what I need to in school, I also learned about the PT profession through observations. After spending 100 hours observing in outpatient, acute care, and pediatric settings, I developed an interest in being an acute care or pediatric PT. I am excited to explore these and other settings as a PT student to define my ultimate career choice.
