General Engineer, Inspector, and Case Development Officer within the Office of Civil Enforcement: Waste and Chemical Enforcement Division

Led comprehensive audits at various nationwide assets (crude/natural gas/CO2 gathering sites, processing plants, terminals, tank farms, pipeline transmission stations, etc.) to drive continuous improvement and ensure compliance with EHS-related policies and regulations (EPA, OSHA, DOT/PHMSA, State/Municipal, etc.). Developed audit reports for review at the executive level and provided input to all stakeholders on corrective actions/remediation, regulatory interpretations, policy changes, and more.

Independently managed all environmental compliance and collaborated with EHS Manager to ensure remaining compliance at a manufacturing facility employing 500-700. Secured funding and approval for $3MM solar installation. Developed a refrigerant loss monitoring system for the site and a loss reduction strategy for the entire business unit. Part of design team for company-wide transition to next-generation sustainable refrigerants. Developed and maintained all emissions calculations, environmental impact estimates, and compliance reports (SARA 311-313, Tier II, Toxic Release Inventory/Form R; CDPHE air and stormwater permits; Pueblo water permit; etc.). Established and led ‘Green Team’ and ‘Risk Assessment’ committees which implemented several risk reduction and sustainability projects by engaging motivated Assembly Technicians. Provided daily direction and coaching to 8-11 EHS Technicians and oversaw operation of wastewater treatment plant. Drove investigations and remediation for EHS incidents: injuries, chemical releases, permit exceedances, etc. Continuously improved processes and programs through root cause analysis. Provided EHS and engineering expertise to assist other departments, senior and corporate leadership, plant strategy/transformation, and more. Administered first aid, worked with physicians to allow employees to return to work (if desired) with modified duty that still allows for optimal healing, and managed workers’ compensation casework, sometimes to litigation.

Solely managed team (budget, performance, strategy; 8-11 EHS Technicians) and all EHS compliance after predecessor’s departure. Guided response to numerous serious accidents, security incidents, internal compliance audits, a ‘severe’ OSHA injury, potential noncompliances/NOVs from the City of Pueblo, and a surprise CDPHE audit of the air permit and emissions systems with zero findings (redeveloped years of emissions calculations and spreadsheets).

Managed food safety, regulatory compliance, and quality operations in a food manufacturing facility. Regularly assessed risk, through statistical and root cause analysis. Supported quality lab, hold order and rework programs, hazard analysis/HACCP, adherence to GMPs, audit preparation, sanitation, training, and other programs. Champion of ‘Zero Loss Culture.’

Served as an official tutor and teaching assistant for the department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. Held group tutoring sessions for ChBE 421: Momentum and Heat Transfer during the Spring '16 and Fall '16 semesters and then served as a teaching assistant for ChBE 101: Hidden World of Engineering in the Spring '17 semester.

Worked in the process engineering group of a propylene oxide and styrene monomer producing plant. Projects proposed solutions to debottleneck the unit (providing profit opportunity of up to $3MM/year) and to improve reliability (preventing lost production upsets up to $4MM). Identified plugged and undersized equipment through process modeling (ASPEN), designed and implemented antifoulant injection system, performed a PHA of proposed additions, developed strapping charts, and more. Identified relief valves with incorrect pressure settings and led an audit to identify other similar deficiencies.

Worked in the process engineering group of an olefins-producing (ethylene, propylene, etc.) steam cracking plant. Projects improved reliability, operation, and cost-efficiency of the unit: resized equipment (pumps, valves, etc.), evaluated process changes for optimal heat integration, and developed flooding curve for C2 distillation column. Worked extensively with the MOC process for project approval (budget justification and safety analysis) and introduced to Process Safety Management, Hazard Analysis, process control, hydraulic modeling, and other safety systems.

Championed a safe workplace and implemented solutions to bring the plant up to and beyond compliance, mainly in waste and footprint mapping, water use and process wastewater treatment, and hazard communication. Conducted stormwater sampling for lab analysis, led meetings in absence of Sr. Engineer, created visuals/digital content, and more.

Performed general clerical work: fielding student questions and concerns, scheduling appointments for advisors, confidential document filing, data entry, visual graphic design for events, etc.

Led a group of kindergartners through a day camp schedule of various activities to develop their social and physical abilities, and communicated regularly with their parents.

Maintained front desk at 47th Ward Alderman's (City Council Member) Community Office and supported constituents as they called or entered (took complaints, answered questions, discussed policy, provided instruction on accessing City services, etc.).
