About Abdul Tejan-Cole

Abdul Tejan-Cole was the executive director of the Open Society Initiative for West Africa (OSIWA). Prior to his appointment, he served as regional director for Africa at Open Society Foundations. He was also commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission in Sierra Leone from December 2007 through April 2010. His previous executive leadership positions include: Appellate Counsel in the Special Court for Sierra Leone; Acting director for the International Center for Transitional Justice’s (ICTJ) Cape Town Office; and president of the Sierra Leone Bar Association. His early career started in Sierra Leone working for one of the leading non-governmental organizations, Campaign for Good Governance (CGG), which he subsequently headed. He is legal practitioner who graduated from the University of Sierra Leone and University College London. He has extensive experience building accountable institutions and designing strategies which are implemented to ensure high quality and timely delivery. As Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission, he led the team that drafted the 2008 Anti-Corruption Act; drafted the strategy of the Commission and led the coordination of the implementation of the national anti-corruption strategy. He is a results-driven leader who has proven skills in growing and managing successful programs. He has extensive knowledge of the issues, context and challenges relating to accountability, human rights, social justice, post-conflict reconstruction, transitional justice and the rule of law and in leading organizational change in Africa. He is a compelling communicator able to thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
