The Department of Petroleum Engineering was part of the College of Engineering Sciences until May 2015 and then moved to the College of Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences afterward. I reported during my tenure assignment to two different Deans. During my term, a minor in Petroleum Engineering was introduced, revision of graduate program was completed, and major revision of the undergraduate program to be more integrated with Geosciences was accomplished. We managed to upgrade of teaching equipment and make teaching labs in PETE at KFUPM a competitive world-class. The department managed to receive more than SAR10 million for equipment and facilities. We recruited highly caliber lab engineers and invested in their training. The number of faculty members grows from 10 in 2012 to 17 in 2017 including Saudi Aramco chair professor positions which was vacant for 10-years. Also, the department recruited 6 graduate assistants (Saudis) all of them are on Scholarship pursuing their PhD. We restructured the Industrial Advisory Committee and received donation of software from service companies of multimillion commercial value. The department managed for reducing the undergraduate enrollment from about 300 to 140 which is the right size for our market. On the other hand, the graduate program was set on the increase from about 45 to 88 with more enrollment at the PhD. The number of postdocs were pushed to 8 by 2017 while it was zero for the past 40-years.

The Center of Petroleum and Minerals is one of six core research centers at the Research Institute, KFUPM. The center director reports directly to the vice rector for Research. During my term, the center witness growth in number of client funded projects and completion of another set of projects that were pending over the previous years. We worked in the center to advance research capablities and build new labs such as: Imaging and Digitial Rock Physcis, Lab of the Future in Geomechnicas (LoF), EOR, Analysiscal and Advnaced Fluid Proposties Lab. The objective was to position the center in competitive level in the Region. We managed to secure more than SAR25 million from the Univeristy to upgrade equipment and rennovate labs. We have been suvcessful in recuriting good number of research scientest later became the seeds for the Center of Integrative Petroleum Research.
