About Abel Abraham
Hi! I’m Abel, a fourth-year Public Health student on the pre-medicine track at the University of Florida (UF). My journey has been a blend of advocacy, research, and hands-on experience, all centered on promoting community health and reducing disparities. One of my biggest passions lies in the arts in medicine sphere, as I firmly believe in the power of arts to promote wellbeing. This has taken shape through my role as a Research Assistant at UF's Center for Arts in Medicine. Under One Nation/One Project, a national arts and health initiative, my team and I recently completed an integrative review to examine the relationship between arts participation, social cohesion, and wellbeing. We hope that our integrative review provides a framework for communities to implement new public health interventions. In addition, I am especially passionate about my role in Streetlight. Streetlight is a peer-support program for patients ages 13-30 at UF Health Shands Hospital who are managing chronic illnesses including sickle cell disease, cancer, and autoimmune illnesses. While forming relationships with patients in the hospital, I've seen the importance of restoring people in their identities, which I hope to continue into my professional career.At UF’s Equal Access Clinic Network, which primarily serves Gainesville’s uninsured population, I served as an HIV Counselor. Conducting free HIV tests with patients was an opportunity to destigmatize HIV and empower individuals in their sexual health. To me, empowerment begins with education; we must debunk myths and increase awareness of treatment options/resources to support patients.Aside from health initiatives, I currently serve as the Executive Vice President within the Florida Cicerones, UF's official student ambassador program. This program has similarly fueled my passion for identity; as we provide tours to prospective students and serve our campus partners, I welcome a future where Gators (past, present, and future) see their identities and experiences as avenues of connection.As an aspiring pediatrician, I am on LinkedIn to connect with others who are similarly passionate about fostering communities of belonging and improving health outcomes.
