Abel Mireles is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of this region’s promising jazz artists. His pursuance for a career in jazz has taken him to the New York area where he is currently studying a Master of Music in Jazz Performance at William Paterson University as well as working as a freelance musician. Studying at WPU has given him the opportunity to work with legendary pianist, Grammy award winner and director of the program Bill Charlap, the great trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, pianists Aaron Goldberg, James Weidman and Armen Donelian, and saxophonist Rich Perry among others. In the short period of one year Abel has had the opportunity to perform in clubs in New York City such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club (with Winard Harper’s Band), Smoke Jazz Club, City Winery, B.B. King Blues Club & Grill NYC, The Rockefeller Center (Rainbow Room), the Shrine, The Shape Shifter and Tomi Jazz, both as leader and sideman.I had the experience of working as a saxophone performer traveling around the world in the cruise ship industry. This experience has given me the tools to guide students in the process of learning the principals of music as an art form of expression through discipline and example. I have come to realize of the importance of the teacher’s example in the music classroom. In the particular process of learning music, it is imperative that a musical interaction between teacher and student gets established in order to achieve goals.
