I have a deep understanding of database performance, tuning, and scalability. I am enjoying the design challenges and performance benefits provided by Vertica, a "Big Data" massively parallel, shared-nothing column-store database. My database career has always been within the area where product management, software development, and IT/DBA issues overlap. I can communicate well with non-technical staff: clarifying needs, resolving ambiguities, and highlighting data limitations. Yet I can also design scalable parallel data structures, and write SQL that can take full advantage of Vertica's parallel scalability. I understand how application developers work, and work well at their side.My documentation is thorough, and I am an excellent teacher and communicator. I am very active in the Oracle community, presenting, writing. I am active our local Big Data and Machine Learning community, learning much from conferences, users' groups, and classes. My education was mathematical, and my approach to most challenges is quantitative and analytical, making use of the scientific method. I am currently enhancing these skills through serious study of data mining.Specialties: statistical analysis, database design, troubleshooting, SQL tuning, documentation, Vertica, and MicroStrategy.

EditorNorthern California Oracle Users' Group Jan 2011 - Dec 2011NoCOUG's speakers, authors, and vendors have given us all a tremendous amount of practical skills and real-world advice for the last 25 years. Their generosity and commitment have benefited us all. Even the end users of our databases are happier because of the skills that have been passed on to us! I am convinced that sharing and collaboration are the keys to professional growth and success. With this inspiration in mind, I'll do my best to ensure that this Journal continues to be a vital source of knowledge. Principal Database ArchitectConvio, Formerly Getactive Sep 2000 - Oct 2011Austin, Tx, UsConvio is the leading provider of on-demand constituent relationship management (CRM) software and services that give nonprofit organizations a better way to inspire and mobilize people to support their organization. At GetActive, I guided development and architecture by focusing on database design. Notable projects include the following:* I designed and built a Kimball-style data warehouse for customer member transactions. I programmed its ETL process in PL/SQL. It was used for all online customer reporting needs for eight years, until the retirement of the GetActive system.* I designed and built mechanisms to store customer member transaction details. A key design feature was based on the realization that activity would occur in spikes, typically a few customers at a time. I took advantage of this pattern with IOTs partitioned by customer, which increased block-level density of relevant data. This drastically reduced logical and physical reads, greatly improving performance. I developed a stable PL/SQL API for managing these data.* I designed and built a query tool allowing customers to select subsets of their members for targeted messaging, segmentation and export. Again, I developed the stable PL/SQL API for this tool. After GetActive's acquisition by Convio, my career shifted more towards troubleshooting, tuning, and staff training. I diagnosed and solved most of the large database performance problems in the Convio databases. I was recognized by management for significantly enhancing database performance, allowing continued growth while eliminating past problems with database availability. But probably the most rewarding aspect of my job in recent years has been my internal staff training program. I have enjoyed training programmers in fairly sophisticated Oracle concepts, such as index clustering factors and tuning by Cardinality Feedback. -
Database Designer And ProgrammerArsdigita 1999 - 2000UsAs an independent consultant, and later through Arsdigita, I designed the database for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) geospatial environmental web-based atlas called Scorecard (http://scorecard.goodguide.com). It launched on Earth Day 1998, and after thirteen years it continues to be a premier source of environmental data and chemical profiles.I developed methods used to integrate several hundred public databases into this unified, coherent system usable by people at all knowledge levels. Since most environmental chemicals lack adequate health data, I developed methods to highlight information gaps. I implemented health risk assessment calculations under the direction of public health professionals. Our data and calculations withstood intense scrutiny of the chemical industry.I developed data quality standards to ensure completeness and accuracy of these data. These standards were so high that we functioned as a de facto data quality review team for government agencies. I developed well-documented data processing recopies so that we could efficiently and accurately integrate the frequent dataset updates into the Scorecard system. I trained project staff on database technology.Core members of this team, including myself, went on to form GetActive, which later merged into Convio. I still work with many of these team members at Convio. -
Chief ScientistEarthsoft 1995 - 1998Pensacola, Florida, UsI designed the database for our environmental data management application. I designed its electronic data delivery tool, including automated review of laboratory quality control data.
