Overview:I worked for WMG Centre HVM Catapult in partnership with GreenSpur Renewables Ltd to improve the MATLAB user interface of an existing software tool intended for internal use, adding visualisations and additional functionality for better user experience. The tool, developed in-house, allows a non-specialist user to predict the performance of a generator design by inputting a list of geometric and other parameters. I was further tasked to utilise the enhanced simulation tool to configure a cost efficient 8.4 MW DD PMG axial generator for offshore wind turbines.Responsibilities and Achievements:- Implemented 200+ simulations to rigorously model and optimise the geometrical parameters of the generator.- Reduced generator CAPEX by 23% whilst increasing power output by 50.2%- Devised a business intelligence tool in Excel using VBA to appraise the results obtained from the simulations performed, in terms of key performance indicators such as power to weight and power to cost ratio. - Adapted to the unfamiliar field of generator modelling by undertaking further research and extensive tutorials on generator topology for extensive parameter estimation.- Enhanced the accessibility of the MATLAB graphical user interface by incorporating in-line help and 2-D visualisations of the generator.- Incorporated batch mode functionality to the user interface allowing automated data entry from Excel to MATLAB.- Reduced simulation time and user inconvenience by upgrading the back-end communication between the MATLAB user interface and JAVA program linking MATLAB and COMSOL, where FEA modelling took place.- Organised regular meetings to formally present the optimised design along with the sensitivity studies conducted to GreenSpur, which were also detailed in an end-of-project report.- Created technical and user documentation where appropriate for the user interface developments.Skills Demonstrated:MATLAB, Eclipse, MS Excel, VBA, COSMOL, Data Analysis
  • University Of Manchester
    Research Analyst
University Of Manchester Jul 2017 - Oct 2017
    Manchester, United Kingdom
Overview:Working with Dr Nan Zhang, I developed and executed a sizing optimisation methodology for a helical baffle heat exchanger. An accurate mathematical model representing the design was constructed and implemented in a sizing optimisation tool, GAMS. The main objective of the research project was to substantially reduce the total weight of the heat exchanger and in turn reduce the CAPEX. Responsibilities and Achievements:- Identified and verified various design variables and constraints of the helical baffle heat exchanger by conducting literature reviews.- Established and proposed a design procedure for extensive optimisation of the heat exchanger.- Formulated a MINLP algorithm integrating the objective function of minimising the weight, the necessary decision variables, the tube and shell side constraints for the sizing optimisation.- Minimised the CAPEX of the helical baffle heat exchanger by 17.2% through rigorous testing and optimisation of the established mathematical model on GAMS software.- Performed a sensitivity analysis to interpret the influence of the geometrical parameters on each other- Conducted case studies of different helical heat exchanger designs in GAMS and systematically analysed the results in EXCEL.- Produced detailed documentation of organised results under strict time constraints after careful interpretation - Provided necessary nomenclature and improvement to the GAMS code for future use by supervisor- Investigated and improved pre-existing business models incorporated in the optimisation tool to gain further insight.Skills Demonstrated:GAMS, Literature Reviews and Case Studies, Application Of Research In Industry, Time Management, ASPEN Plus, SPRINT
  • Manchester Institute Of Biotechnology
    Research Intern
Manchester Institute Of Biotechnology May 2017 - Aug 2017
    Manchester, United Kingdom
Overview:Nitrogenases are vital enzymes for the catalytic conversion of nitrogen molecules to ammonia. Generally, the active site used for nitrogenase is a multinuclear Fe-Mo centre which is still controversial, because the mechanism and order of proton and electron transfer processes that occur during the catalytic cycle is still unresolved. In pursuance of combating the issues regarding the active site, I performed a computational study in order to model and further diagnose the fixation of nitrogen to ammonia on a biomimetic nuclear iron centre, which provided not only an efficient turnover but also accommodated for sufficient enzyme sustainability to operate under reduced conditions. The research project conducted was deemed to be successful with all objectives accomplished as the results procured from the computations are in course for publication in a scientific research paper, of which I am the co-author.Responsibilities and Achievements:- Devised a mechanism in ChemDraw software representing all the potential protonation pathways and intermediates to the final product.- Utilised Gaussian-09 and ChemCraft to rigorously model and evaluate all feasible routes leading to the end product by thorough calculations of energy barrier heights.- Proposed a structural optimisation and energy valuation of the catalytic network leading to an improved pathway - Liaised with PhD students to perform a series of density functional and quantum chemistry calculations on the electron and proton transfer processes occurring in the catalytic reaction.- Troubleshooted the proton transfer steps of the complex in various oxidation and spin states to prove that the pKa values of nitrogenase intermediates vary to a minimal extent with iron oxidation states.- Co-authored a scientific research paper for publication after careful examination and evaluation of compiled results.Skills Demonstrated:Report Writing, Data analysis, Software adaptability, Research Oriented
