Computational Pairing of the Interpreted Data to the Experimental Work • Worked with a team of industry researchers, professors, and post-docs on data-acquisition processes and equipment at the Compressor Spin Pit Facility (CSPF), studying blade-to-encasing rub degradation in GE Aviation turbine prototypes. • Generated CFD models for internal flow passages and full-stage turbines in Fluent, as part of a project to understand Bladeto-Case rub degradation using experimental structural analyses along with computational FEA, for GE Aviation. • Examined tolerance, durability, design allowable and structural modeling, including dynamics and loads, stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized include CATIA, ABAQUS, Hypermesh, and a variety of proprietary software applications. • Prepared extensive structural analysis calculation reports and delivered engineering presentations. • Maintained records of performance reports for future reference. • Provided technical assistance; proposed process improvement recommendations for GE’s maintenance operations. • Reviewed systems theory descriptions often to certify common understanding of systems and components. • Assisted with the development and design data in PDM to ensure successful completion of every prototype test.

Flow Analysis over the Einstein Airfoil • Analyzed the failure of Einstein’s “Cat’s Back” Airfoil in a 3’x5’ subsonic wind tunnel using PIV, Oil Flow visualization, tufts, Pressure-Taps and CFD; airfoil was molded out of carbon-fiber and designed with thorough structural analysis. • Designed support structure accordingly to mechanical, vibrational, and environmental specifications. • Analyzed engineering designs and design changes to determine maintenance requirements, procedures and instructions. • Proposed a novel hypothesis for the root cause of the failure from coalescing observations made from PIV video footages, with data analyses of the readings from Pressure-Taps; the work is still being continued at the ARC.

Master’s Thesis: Role of Passive Vortex Generators (PVGs) in Fighter Aircraft Engine Air-Flow Control • Self-proposed project for Master’s Thesis, researching into the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of my design for the PVGs using CFD and FE analyses in combination with experimental data obtained from conducting test runs in the wind tunnel. Project involved fabrication of PVGs with an innovative design developed through a NASA proprietary aerodynamic shape optimization code. • Successfully conceptualized and presented the proposal, along with preliminary CFD and FE analyses, in simulation using CATIA, Fluent and Hypermesh to obtain funding for the experiments. • Created and operated a custom test rig inside a 3’x5’ subsonic wind-tunnel, including a scaled down stealth aircraft serpentine-inlet made from carbon fiber, 3D printed PVGs, and pressure DAQ device connections. • Improvised and calibrated a pressure measurement device, and a mechanism to simulate engine throughput constraints using a vacuum cleaner for a realistic simulation, in both cases obviating expensive dedicated lab equipment. • Conducted case studies to evaluate design integrity, uncertainty errors, manufacturing capability, and cost/weight trade off. • Completed the project using only 1/8th of the assigned initial budget, and graduated a semester early.
