I received my Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Rabi Musah, on the development of strategies that can be directed towards eradication of HIV-1 infection. My research adopts a two-pronged approach in making such advances. First, I am involved with exploiting the susceptibility of an essential protein in HIV to electrophilic attack by small organic molecules to develop novel drugs. Second, I am working on understanding why certain approaches to the development of drugs to combat HIV infection, such as those based on RNA/DNA therapeutics, have not been as effective as had been hoped. In my work thus far, I have uncovered some peculiar properties of virus that hint at the reasons why..The findings have also lead to the discovery of strategies that can be used to circumvent the challenges to the development of a cure for HIV and by extension other viral infections.
