When I was 26, I moved from Tennessee to Puerto Rico and started my professional career over from scratch. When I was 34, my family and I moved to Queens, New York, and I devoted myself to being a stay-at-home parent while working part-time as a translator. At 38, I was able to focus again on my career, and I began law school. From all my experiences, I have learned many important lessons. Most importantly, family comes first and the sacrifices we make for family are almost always worth it. As for professional life, here are some of the lessons I have learned about professionalism and work culture:- people notice your hard work even if you don’t get recognition;- people notice how they are treated (good or bad) even if they don’t say anything;- we do our best work in a supportive environment where respect for the dignity of all humans is universal; and- change is inevitable, but we can keep up with changes if we are willing to keep learning.I have learned these lessons and a lot more, but I am still learning. And I am okay with that! I believe a willingness to learn and to work hard separates professionals who will continue to grow from people who find themselves stuck and unfulfilled.
