Phd ScholarUcl Nov 2017 - Apr 2022London, United KingdomMy research focussed on the cyclic liquefaction of mine tailings under the supervision of Professor Matthew Richard Coop.Thesis summary: After the mining process a significant amount of waste material, known as tailings, is produced. Tailings are most commonly disposed of by adding water and pumping them as a slurry into large lagoons retained by dams constructed from the coarser part of the tailings. The very loose state of the sediments in the lagoon promotes their liquefaction, so that the consequences of dam failure can be very severe. In the past decade, there have been more than 245 tailings dam incidents with around two to three major failures per annum recently; the Brumadinho iron tailings dam in Brazil failed in 2019 killing over 300 people. The focus of this study is failure due to cyclic liquefaction. The cyclic force vibrations from shaking causes the pore water pressure to build up which reduces the effective stress in the soil leading to liquefaction. The results of this study will give important information about the behaviour of these materials and the dam design conditions required for safety.During my PhD I also taught laboratory classes to undergraduate students, marked MSc coursework papers, presented a paper at the BGA YGES conference at the University of Surrey, was elected as the Communication Manager for my departmental research society, entered the three-minute thesis competition, prepared a poster for the BGA Cooling Prize Competition and submitted a paper to present at the ICSMGE conference in Sydney in 2022. I am currently in the process of publishing papers from my research. -
