Abid graduated with a 1st class honours degree in Civil Engineering. He is a chartered civil/geostructural engineer with many years of international experience in designs for onshore, nearshore & offshore structures, railway & highway construction schemes, bridges, water supply & wastewater treatment schemes, tunnels, deep foundations & multi-level basement structures for high rise buildings. He has designed and supervised engineering projects in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Ghana. Major projects include; M1 Motorway Widening UK, Edinburgh Light Rail Network UK, Limerick Wastewater Tunnel Ireland, Southeast Collector (SEC) Tunnel Toronto Canada, RTG-KRT Highway Crossing Riyadh Saudi-Arabia, Cross Rail Victoria Dock Portal UK, Dublin Metro North Light Railway and the Dublin Port's new Ro-Ro Ramp 2.Abid carried out specialist PhD research on the behaviour of foundations subject to cyclic and vertical eccentric loading, with particular interest in wind turbine foundations. Through full-scale instrumentation & scale model testing of wind turbine foundations, he developed a new consistent macro element model for the design of eccentrically loaded footings. He was the first ever three time-recipient of the Geotechnical Trust Fund Award of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, for research in Geotechnics.In recent years, Abid has focused on the development and application of novel restraint systems for retaining walls & deep basement structures as alternatives to conventional methods, as well as the development and application of alternative design methods for the construction of basements beneath existing buildings. These have been adopted as permanent solutions on projects in the U.K and Ireland, while they have also been nominated for three separate prestigious industry awards. Abid has spoken at many local and international specialist engineering conferences and published in many industry journals and conference proceedings.
