AttorneyAbigail C. Field, P.C. Aug 2009 - PresentA full service general practice serving clients and other attorneys on the East End of Long Island. Starting in June of 2019, a major client was the Voting Rights Lab, for whom I became an employee in March of 2020, minimizing my practice accordingly. Recent matters include real estate transactions, academic research, ghostwriting pleadings, and arbitrating against insurance companies on behalf of doctors.Over the years, my practice has included real estate, wills, and contracts, including litigation finance contracts; litigation including employment (employee side), landlord-tenant (tenant side), debtor defense, quiet title, child support enforcement, First Amendment, and other matters. I have also done guardianship work, advised a nonprofit on governance, and assisted with academic research, even co-authoring a law review article on third-party litigation finance.

Legislative CounselVoting Rights Lab Jun 2019 - Jul 2023At Voting Rights Lab, my primary responsibilities related to creating the Tracker, but extended far beyond that. I contributed regularly to our weekly and monthly newsletters, helped research, draft, and fact check reports, and routinely supported the comms team with research to respond to reporters' requests. Finally, I supported campaign teams in the states we lobbied in (although I did not lobby) with my election law expertise and knowledge of how election law changed in each state from 2020 through the present.Through my Tracker-related, primary duties, I: Created nearly 30 percent of Voting Rights Lab's Bill Tracker's content (current and archived) across the 2020 through 2023 legislative sessions, analyzing and indexing thousands of bills from nearly half of the states. My portfolio of states included up to 17 at a time, with changes in the portfolio over the years). Created roughly 20 percent of the Tracker's existing law content, and maintained the accuracy of a larger proportion over the years, reflecting changes in my portfolio. Co-created the analytic scheme used to index the Tracker. That work includes co-creating the special categories we designed to describe legislative trends we spotted in the wake of the 2020 election: shifts in election authority and election interference. Co-created a special database and other products to track covid-driven state and local level changes to election policy in 2020, whether done legislatively, administratively, or through litigation. I paid close attention to how all the 2020 elections were conducted--not just November--in 17 states, including Arizona, Florida, Wisconsin, Montana, New York, California. Bearing witness to how states and localities responded to the covid pandemic to offer safe voting gave me invaluable context for understanding the bills introduced in 2020's wake. -
Acting Executive Director And Managing Editor/Writer Of Gonorthfork.OrgNorth Fork Promotion Council Jan 2015 - Jul 2017North Fork Long IslandThe North Fork Promotion Council seeks to attract visitors to the North Fork of Long Island. As Acting Executive Director, I managed production of our annual Guide, including selling ads to both new and repeat customers. I managed other specialty publications, managed our participation travel shows, hosted press tours, organized special events, and sought (and won) grants. Finally, I managed our tourist information booths and the three employees who staffed them.Starting in May, 2014, before becoming Acting Executive director, through July, 2017 I published GoNorthFork.org for the NFPC, a weekly online magazine and newsletter about what's happening on the North Fork. In addition to well-organized event listings, the magazine featured my interview of a local artist, entrepreneur, or representative of a cultural organization or event. At some point after we had begun publishing our profiles of local notable people, the local paper began a similar feature.

ContributorCorporate Secretary Magazine Jul 2011 - Feb 2016I covered legal compliance and risk stories, usually centered around cases or rulemakings, on topics broadly applicable to business. I published 10-20 stories a year, mostly on the website, some in the print editions. -
ResearcherUniversity Of Iowa Jun 2012 - Jun 2015With Professor Maya Steinitz, I created and managed a website about litigation finance contracting, www.litigationfinancecontract.com. We also co-authored a related article in the University of Iowa Law Review. Since then and through the present, I have worked directly with Professor Steinitz on one-off research topics and writing projects, not through the University of Iowa. She is currently tenured at Boston University. -
ContributorFortune.Com Apr 2011 - Sep 2011I wrote an occasional column on all things banking from the consumer and investor perspective.
-
ColumnistAol'S Daily Finance Feb 2010 - Apr 2011I wrote near daily columns for AOL's business page on a wide range of topics. From October 2010 through April 2011, I specialized in covering foreclosure fraud and the homeowner dimension of the financial crisis. I knew consumer bankruptcy attorneys who would give me the banks' fraudulent pleadings, could give me real case examples of the mortgage servicer machine.

Legislative AdvocateNew Jersey Public Interest Research Group (Njpirg) Feb 2005 - Aug 2007Researched public policy and published reports; ran successful campaigns to persuade New Jersey legislators and executive offices for or against legislation or regulation relating to consumer protection, financial privacy, publicly-financed campaigns, and other good government issues; held legislators accountable with a scorecard; did media work including designing and hosting press conferences, meeting with editorial boards, doing TV and radio interviews, publishing op-eds and LTEs. My most impactful victory was designing and running NJPIRG's principles pledge campaign that, along with a strong coalition, defeated then-Governor Corzine's effort to sell the right to collect NJ's toll revenue and control the three highways' maintenance to Wall Street for 100 or so years. My most notable report exposed all of the ways prescription drug marketing distorts medical practice by corrupting both doctors' scientific understanding and their loyalty. I analyzed five years of FDA Warning Letters to prescription drug companies, categorizing the patterns of marketing violations and counting their frequency in each year. I also profiled the marketing of five drugs, one for each year, to make the statistics tangible. Finally, I set the findings in deeply-research context, describing all the mechanisms through which marketing creates the scientific record it wants. That report generated international press coverage.
