Abigail Mariam, Ph.D. is a Director of Community Education and Alumni Engagement at Havenly. They is proficient in Amharic and Spanish. Colleagues describe them as "I first met Abi when she worked as a resident tutor in Pforzheimer House at Harvard College, so I’ve known her for over four years now. Throughout the time that I’ve known her, I’ve seen nothing but someone who is thoughtful, considerate, well-measured, insightful, and frankly visionary. When I was working on my senior honors thesis, Abi offered her time, advice, and feedback on my writing, helping me to hone my argument and polish my ideas. But she also went beyond simply giving me line edits during this time; Abi also helped to ensure that I maintained a healthy balance, sharing insights from her life as a student and ensuring that I did not become burned out. What’s more, she managed to do this for me while not only being a resource to dozens of other students, but also taking the time to enrich our House experience. She held one particularly memorable, enjoyable, and informative dinner talk where we learned about and discussed Ethiopia, Eritrea, and race in America. Abi has a way with words that allows her to help people—me and many others—to identify their own strengths and feel empowered to act in the word, confident in those strengths. I recently told her that she had the chops to be a motivational speaker—and I stand behind that assessment. She doesn’t tell people how to feel; she gives people space to feel their best. Plus, when I turned to Abi for advice on a sensitive work matter, the feedback that she provided exhibited not only understanding of my personal circumstances, but also logic and an assessment of the situation that was reasonable, accurate, and, most importantly, produced a workable solution. Though she has never directly managed me, I have no doubt that she’s amply capable of occupying a managerial/supervisory role. She’s able to see the big picture without losing track of the humanity of everyone involved."
