What’s more, she managed to do this for me while not only being a resource to dozens of other students, but also taking the time to enrich our House experience. She held one particularly memorable, enjoyable, and informative dinner talk where we learned about and discussed Ethiopia, Eritrea, and race in America. Abi has a way with words that allows her to help people—me and many others—to identify their own strengths and feel empowered to act in the word, confident in those strengths. I recently told her that she had the chops to be a motivational speaker—and I stand behind that assessment. She doesn’t tell people how to feel; she gives people space to feel their best. Plus, when I turned to Abi for advice on a sensitive work matter, the feedback that she provided exhibited not only understanding of my personal circumstances, but also logic and an assessment of the situation that was reasonable, accurate, and, most importantly, produced a workable solution. Though she has never directly managed me, I have no doubt that she’s amply capable of occupying a managerial/supervisory role. She’s able to see the big picture without losing track of the humanity of everyone involved."

Ph.D. CandidateHarvard University Aug 2017 - May 2023My research interests are at the intersection of race, education, and social movements. My dissertation, entitled The Worldbuilders: Pedagogy, Practice, and Politics in Black Power-era Independent Schools, investigates the creation and impact of the pedagogies of schools started by organizations of the Black Power social movement of the late 1960’s and 1970’s. I focus on two cases: the Oakland Community School, started by the Black Panther Party, and the New Concept Development Center, started by the Institute for Positive Education in Chicago. I use qualitative, historical, and archival methods in my research. I greatly enjoy teaching and my experiences in the classroom have inspired my research interests. In addition to these topics, I have also done research on housing insecurity and community-based organizations serving unhoused populations. -
