I spent two summers lifeguarding, and this past summer as the head-lifeguard. As a lifeguard, I learned about patience and multitasking, especially in a stressful environment. I was able to discern between rowdy summer-camp attendees and patrons that truly needed my help. By practicing preventative measures in such a structured environment, I learned about the importance of the phrase “better safe than sorry”, which I believe applies to every scenario. As the head-lifeguard my responsibilities were expanded greatly. I handled thousands of customer interactions across a variety of age-groups and life-stages. I learned how to manage an entire pool’s worth of staff while also ensuring the safety of the pool full of patrons. I became adaptable, able to fill any roll at the last minute, whether that was teaching swim lessons to any age group, or hopping back on the chair. I encountered some of the most stressful situations of my life and learned how to safely run a pool whilst also keeping staff calm and effective. As a head-lifeguard, I also interacted a lot more with upper-management and feel much more equipped to negotiate and advocate for myself in the future.
