My passion for this work starts with the belief that education can be a powerful tool for justice, but that for too many children, school is one of the first places that they experience injustice. I started my career as a rural educator in Granville County, North Carolina, where I taught elementary science and engineering. I've since served in education roles at the local, state and national levels, and my work has been featured by National Public Radio, CBS News, the Wall Street Journal, and Education Week, among other outlets.A proud Baltimorean, I spent over half a decade organizing teachers, students, and parents in the fight for education equity in Baltimore. As part of a local organizing alliance, my team won big for kids, including securing $30 million in new money for Baltimore City schools. Through this work, I've learned the power of community organizing, and have been perpetually inspired by the leadership of visionary, equity-minded educators fighting alongside their students.
