- Evaluated scientific articles on childhood exposures to asbestos, while also focusing on environmental contamination and ambient levels of asbestos in urban and rural areas. With this research, I wrote 15 article reviews that were used by the Primary Investigator to submit a successful grant proposal.- Conducted a literature search of primary literature on asbestos abatement and exposures during demolition activity that returned 70 articles. I then retained 35 articles and authored article reviews to write a 20-page literature review that summarized research methods, exposure levels, and demolition procedures.- Coordinated with the Principal Investigator to develop project goals and timelines and communicate research progress and outcomes.- Coded qualitative noise exposure data from industry and input values into excel for future statistical analysis.- Collaborated with a medical student to collect personal and area noise samples in American religious institutions to evaluate noise exposure during religious services.- Analyzed video samples and coded hazardous behaviors and potential exposures during worker activity for informal electronic waste (e-waste) operations in Chile and Thailand.

Indianapolis, Indiana Area

- Conducted quantitative air monitoring during bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing to determine operator's potential inhalation exposure to insulin crystals. Additionally, I documented field notes to qualitatively evaluate potential sources of exposure.- Statistically determined exposure potential by comparing the 95th percentile exposure concentration to the occupational exposure limit. Additionally, I used Bayesian Decision Analysis to predict the potential for future inhalation exposure and to evaluate the effectiveness of respiratory protection.- Communicated results to management and personnel using a technical report, medical personnel notifications, and a technical presentation.- Influenced management’s selection of exposure control devices using evidence-based recommendations for respiratory protection. Outside of my primary internship responsibilities, I also:- Collected semi-quantitative data using colorimetric indicator tubes to investigate the source of odor complaints and evaluate inhalation exposure risk for employees in a manufacturing area.- Collaborated with a certified athletic trainer to evaluate ergonomic risks and to document the assessment conclusions and design improvements in a database tool for communication.

Kalamazoo, Michigan Area

- Monitored noise levels for three packaging lines during 24-hour brewery operations to report workers’ average noise exposure and area noise levels. Compared the noise levels to compliance standards and published a technical PowerPoint presentation to communicate outcomes to executive directors and employees. - Inventoried over 300 chemicals for maintenance and downtown restaurant operations to generate an index and obtained updated safety data sheets, thus maintaining compliance with hazard communication standards.- Updated safety inspection manuals for forklift operation for the powered industrial truck safety group, contributing to more informed forklift operators and a streamlined inspection process.- Contributed updates and solutions to cross-departmental groups for chemical management, safety incident review, and the volunteer employee safety organization. - Developed two safety presentations on confined space awareness and heat exhaustion for continuous, required training for brewery personnel. - Acted as the subject matter expert (SME) to publish a training module on bloodborne pathogens for required training through the learning management system.- Inventoried personal protective equipment (PPE) and submitted bi-weekly orders to the purchasing department to provide protection for employees.

- Qualitatively assessed slip, trip, and fall hazards for a 600,000 square foot pharmaceutical manufacturing and research site. Assessed manufacturing, lab, and office environments for compliance with corporate, federal, and state regulations. - Identified over 80 slip, trip, and fall hazards and prioritized corrective controls using an exposure-risk matrix. Coordinated with maintenance, EHS, facilities management, and consultants to implement the corrective controls. - Documented the hazards, controls, and assessment procedures within an excel reference index for internal review and future compliance audits for Voluntary Protection Program STAR re-certification. Outside of my primary internship responsibilities, I also:- Updated and generated hazardous communication labels for manufactured buffer solutions.- Calculated percent weights for in-house buffer production and updated Safety Data Sheets (SDS). - Assessed biological waste handling, storage, and labeling weekly in laboratories to report noncompliance. - Completed a 10 Hour OSHA training program on General Industry, date of issue: 06/02/2016
