As the world around us seems to speed up and change day by day, we as individuals need to take care of ourselves through said change. A way that we can all allow time for our bodies and minds to be happy is through leisure and recreation. For me, leisure and recreation are activities and a state of mind that challenge a person to improve their self confidence and give them benefits of happiness, freedom, and self fulfillment. My leisure and professional activity of choice is diving (SCUBA, freediving, and spearfishing). By involving risk in my leisure activities, I can challenge my mind to focus and to think logically, while still moving my body. These activities produce benefits for me such as keeping my body healthy, stimulating my brain, feelings of happiness and fulfillment, and a sense of freedom. Through the act of diving, a person can learn about how to control their breath and bodies in ways that they may never have thought were possible. Participating in leisure and recreational activities builds self confidence, a sense of belonging, and a connection to nature and/ or people around them. I aim to encourage people to find time in their lives for building one’s self confidence through leisure activities and to find the activities that stimulate and allow them to grow and find happiness. My goal in being a dive leader and scientific diver is to share and spread the connection to water that humans inherently have and to build people’s self confidence. I believe that in order for someone to grow, they must change something in their lives and challenge themselves to learn a new skill. I want to help people grow by teaching them how to SCUBA and freedive and to show them that humans belong in water. Through my instruction I aim to spread stewardship and water conservation by showing people the underwater environment while teaching proper safety measures and responses. By training and connecting more people, I believe that diving has the potential to open people’s eyes to the destruction of our waterways and to give them the benefits that come with participating in leisure and recreational activities. My goal is to show people how they can take care of themselves and the environment with leisure and recreation and specifically do so through diving and conservation.
