Mark Greer Email and Phone Number
I worked for thirty-four years as an economics professor. Toward the end of my academic career, the ideologically driven culture wars and identity politics plaguing university life alienated me from academia. I found the upsurge of campus antisemitism particularly distressing, for Jewish professors I took as an undergraduate student have had a profound positive impact on my life. With the end of the 2022-23 academic year, I brought my academic career to a close. I remain on the fringes of the academy, though, serving as a part-time adjunct instructor in the School of Business at Washburn University while I pursue other goals. My primary endeavor since leaving academia has been managing two small tracts of Kansas farmland. Part of my family's heritage, they have been in my family for five generations. I have worked with a local farmer to convert most of the acreage into native Kansas prairie grasses, which you can see behind me in my profile photo and in the banner photo. I find a sublime beauty in the Kansas prairie, and rural American life, especially farming culture, holds out many appeals, with its wholesome attitudes toward family, vocation, and community.I spend part of each year in New Zealand, where my wife and I own a home and our son works, and where I hold a permanent resident visa. Although I experience rural Maori culture from a distance, as I am an outsider to it, I find much value in it, with its reverence for the land and the divine mystery it finds in nature.
