Research Focus: I am investigating the mechanisms of gene regulation by a critical set of transcription factors responsible for Th17 cell differentiation and activation. These cells are thought to play a key role in several autoimmune disorders such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn's disease. Understanding the mechanisms of Th17 cell activation is essential in better understanding these diseases as well as providing insight into potential therapies that function with a higher degree of specificity.

I studied the biochemical properties of the NF-kB family of transcription factors. Improper regulation of NF-kB has been implicated in numerous diseases including various types of inflammatory disorders as well as cancer. However, the unique contributions of the different NF-kB members to disease progression are not well understood. We uncovered fundamental differences in the DNA binding preferences of the distinct NF-kB dimers that contribute to differential gene expression profiles. As a result, the unique members of NF-kB participate in disease progression in distinct ways that are partially governed by differences in the ability to interact with DNA.
