John's experience includes over 25 years of designing projects to investigate the fate and transport of reactive and non-reactive chemical species, including acid-mine/acid-rock drainage, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nutrients. Areas of specialization include designing and managing in situ field tests; designing geochemical sampling and analysis plans; designing non-standard geochemical testing methods; collecting and interpreting geochemical, hydraulic, and pneumatic data; applying numerical modeling techniques to hydrochemical, geochemical, and hydrologic problems; and risk assessment of groundwater, surface water, and soils. Geochemical testing methods employed include standard and modified Acid-Base Accounting (ABA), Synthetic Precipitation Leaching Procedure (SPLP), Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure (MWMP), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and other spectroscopic techniques, Whole Rock Analyses, Selective Extractions, standard and non-standard column testing, and field-scale pilot tests.Geochemical modeling includes using PHREEQC or MINTEQ-A2 to predict pit lake chemistry for remedial investigations, estimating lime neutralization requirements of and evaporites from mine process waters, assessing the precipitation potential of mixing of acid-mine drainage in an alluvial aquifer, assessing the fouling potential of mixing treated effluent into alluvial aquifers, and assessing scaling potential in production wells. Mr. Villinski has also used simple mixing models, Piper and Stiff diagrams, tracers, and isotope data to understand types and sources of waters.As a photographer, I specialize in finding patterns and colors in the deserts of the southwestern United States. I focus on the interaction of water and natural objects as well as the interaction between the harsh environment and the objects discarded by our species.
