In this role, I have worked with multiple clients on a wide variety of projects. As the lead learning experience designer on a project, I coordinate with clients, subject matter experts, project managers, art directors, media designers, and quality assurance testers. I have designed virtual and in-person instructor led training ranging from one-hour workshops to multi-week programs on topics related to leadership, interpreting sales data, loss prevention, diversity & inclusion, customer-centred design, health & safety, and more (facilitator guides, participant workbooks, slide decks, job aids).I have designed web-based training (produced in Storyline) on topics such as health and safety, personal hygiene, psychological safety, and delivery receiving procedures (blueprint, storyboard, script).I have served as project manager, team co-lead, and learning experience designer on a large multi-week full-time training program for a major financial institution (multiple interconnected assets including both virtual instructor-led training, job aids, e-learning, and more).

Managed the successful launch of a new McMaster service offering training and support for ESL graduate and undergraduate students including the development of 57 unique workshops offered across 868 sessions to approximately 200 students over the first 8 months.Designed innovative instruction both alone and with input from subject matter experts (17 workshops on academic etiquette, study strategies, presentation skills, critical thinking, sociocultural linguistics, and more); Supervised the development of additional workshops (35 workshops covering writing skills, academic integrity, grammar, mental health, communication skills, cultural adjustment, and more); Presentation and content quality of workshops rated 4.5 out of 5 (n = 483).Facilitated workshops for non-native English speakers on a variety of topics; Provided small group and individual coaching on presentation skills. Supervised a team of 10+ designers, subject matter experts, facilitators, and staff – coaching, consulting, scheduling, and ensuring quality control. Collected, analyzed, and evaluated data on attendance, services offered, resource allocation, and feedback ratings at mid- and end-of-year; Provided this information to stakeholders in both spreadsheet and infographic format. Created an additional infographic to convey data about our parent-program, MELD.Ensured a consistent and professional presentation via the development and distribution of a PowerPoint template and consistent quality control of all instructional and marketing materials. Co-produced weekly informational newsletters.Continuously researched best practices in support services for international students and adjusted curriculum accordingly.Currently re-designing program structure, dissecting workshop content into smaller chunks in order to increase engagement and applicability; Creating online modules and microlearning components using video, animations, and Articulate 360.

Awarded a 2-year, $15,000 fellowship to develop and assess the use of a learning portfolio as a year-end assignment within the McMaster English Language Development (MELD) program.Implemented 3 successive iterations of the portfolio assignment, including needs analysis and evaluation along with a final celebratory showcase.Supervised 3 student partners who developed and lead workshops on reflective practice and consulted with students on the actual creation of their portfolios using PebblePad, Wix, or PowerPoint.Adapted two comprehensive PowerPoint templates, adding step-by-step instructions for both content and design, along with filler images and text to guide students.Coordinated with a team of 21 instructors to roll this assignment out to 360 students across 21 class sections (final and largest iteration).Regularly met with other fellows across the university to receive training on leadership and educational research as well as to discuss and plan outreach events for other faculty members.

Designed and ran a pilot pre- and post-test eye-tracking study with 30 participants to test reading improvement during a year-long ESL program. Programmed and ran the study using the EyeLink 1000 and its associated ExperimentBuilder software. Explored and analyzed the data using R to identify a variety of factors related to skill, motivation, and language background that might impact relative levels of success in the program and in the development of reading skills specifically. Transferred the project to a Post-Doctoral Fellow who has continued this vein of research, collecting data on more than 300 additional students.

May 2012 - Sept 2014: Doctoral research conducted with Dr. Victor Kuperman. Explored the interplay between emotion and language processing. Collected large sets of word norms for both emotion and concreteness, used these norms to evaluate the effect of emotion on lexical decision and naming times, tested a new method for assessing the emotional underpinnings of these effects, and explored the distribution of emotion across the English lexicon. Resulted in 4 publications and one manuscript in preparation.Sept 2010 - May 2012: Doctoral research conducted with Dr. Karin Humphreys. Used the Linguistic Category Model to measure the level of abstraction in people’s self-talk compared to their talk about close or distant others. Included both self-presentation motivation and culture as possible factors. Transferred to the Reading Lab.
