Over a decade of Architecture and construction, both as employee and business owner, have taught Ace many valuable lessons. Lesson #1: Life is the sum of our relationships. Whether it’s Clients, Contractors, or Consultants, worth comes from the value we offer each other. Value grows as we offer more of what the other side needs and shrinks when we can’t. Every interpersonal interaction tells a story about ourselves and what we mean to each other. Lesson #2: Services are meant to produce solutions and those solutions should outnumber problems. Conflicts are inevitable but there are always multiple perspectives on and approaches to addressing them. Finding the best one is tough, because we’re human, but necessary, because we must make progress. Lesson #3: Entitlement spawns delusion. Any Architect not putting Client needs and the safety of stakeholders first isn’t an ally; they’re a liability. This means seeking and maintaining the relationships necessary to fulfill our most basic, professional function in a complex industry; cooperate. Empathy requires experience and we owe people occupying and financing projects both. Ace is honored to join Atlantic-AE, LLC to continue bringing adaptable, dependable, and relatable services directly to Clients who pay for results and outcomes, not drama. Show less

Having recently started my own company offering Architecture and BIM Consulting services, I’ve learned how necessary practicality, clear communication, and trust are to project completion. Services are meant to produce solutions and those solutions should outnumber a Client’s problems 3 to 1. As a youngblood at a traditional firm, I absorbed information at light speed. A natural innovator, I not only acquired ritual, I analyzed and updated practices, regardless of personal financial reward. Academia sparked the creative fire but working my first job in this field secured the burn. The seriousness with which the traditional process of Construction Document production and the quality control thereof was imprinted upon the entire team. Documents going out the door were seen as the measure of one's soul and serious minds created legit outcomes. With the firm’s leaders looking to modernize their ways, be it for recruitment, profitability, or both, I volunteered for the responsibility of introducing BIM and transitioning other software to the cloud. This, it turns out, is not easy. With centuries worth of the firm's habits and the classic 'digital divide' in place, I diplomatically analyzed and remedied the too-common standard array of siloed data, 2D drafting, unorganized communications, local-only file storage, etc. For BIM, digitally pre-building the project represented a philosophical shift for a firm. It meant that participating staff had to know more about what they're doing and self-police. It meant folks couldn't bullshit their way into Construction Documents to the chagrin of every Contractor involved. It called for technical knowledge, previously reserved for mid-range and beyond, to exist in the brains of the traditional worker bee. Unlike many BIM experts in small firms, I didn't spoon feed the group. My approach was to either do it or don't. After researching and customizing best practices, I created a BIM environment most suitable for the firm's project types. Using a combination of web research, professional consultations, regional conferences and leading lunch meetings, I was able to make both Revit and Google Business Apps both useful and profitable.
