As the Chief Scientist for the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department at MITRE, Paul Ward leads multidisciplinary teams of experts who apply scientific methods and insights to address complex sociotechnical challenges in the public interest. With over 20 years of experience in the cognitive and decision sciences he has a proven track record of delivering innovative and impactful solutions for various domains, such as defense, law enforcement, intelligence, cybersecurity, health, education, and sport.Paul Ward also holds an adjunct position as Professor of Psychology at Michigan Technological University. Over the past two decades, he has conducted pioneering research and published multiple books and over 200 papers on topics related to expert sensemaking and decision making, augmented cognition, human-machine teaming, human-centered AI and AI assurance. He is a Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Human Factors Specialist, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. He is passionate about advancing the scientific understanding of human and machine cognitive capabilities, exploring the interdependencies between the two in collaborative work, and applying this knowledge to enhance the design, evaluation, and assurance of systems, technologies, training and policies.
