Conduct didactic courses in virology and parasitology

• Supervise and conduct Phase I studies involving design, construction and generation of lentivirus for the successful expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) and ATP-binding cassette subfamily G1 protein (ABCG1) for in vitro and in vivo testing.• Develop protocol for lentivirus-mediated delivery of PPAR gamma and ABCG1 in granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) knockout mice.• Develop assays for measurement of cholesterol efflux and phospholipids within alveolar macrophages from GM-CSF and PPAR gamma knockout mice(Publications 7, Abstracts 11).• Supervise and conduct Phase I studies involving design, generation and isolation of recombinant human parainfluenza viruses by"reverse genetics".• Investigate host immune responses to recombinant human parainfluenza viruses.• Investigate immune-inflammatory responses to respiratory virus infections in patients with rare pulmonary diseases, notably, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP).(Publications 12, Abstracts 20).

• Utilize molecular techniques for generation of mutant viral polymerase proteins and examine the effects of mutations on viral transcription using reporter gene assays and protein-protein interactions• Generate a stable cell line expressing a viral protein using lentivirus-mediated expression system• Investigate the role of a viral protein in regulating viral replication and host immune response• Analyze data, interpret results, participate in scientific discussion with mentor and colleagues• Present results at departmental seminars and national and international scientific meetings• Publish results in peer reviewed journals• Mentor undergraduate, graduate students

• Conduct experimental studies to elucidate the intracellular transport of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in polarized epithelial cells.• Successfully generated stable cell lines expressing mutant EGFR and examined the effects of mutations on intracellular trafficking• Analyze data and interpret results, participate in scientific discussion with mentor and colleagues• Present results at departmental seminars and national and international scientific meetings
