I worked with the global R&D organization as a member of the 8-person S&T Leadership Council, partnering closely with the chief R&D officer. A primary focus was to help the R&D leaders for each line of business communicate effectively within their global teams, to the company overall, and to external audiences, in support of the Council's strategic goals. Additionally, I helped tell the story of innovation at Owens Corning to internal and external audiences. In 2018, I began leading communications for the sustainability team as well, playing a large role in creating the company's annual Sustainability Report, working with the chief sustainability officer on presentations and media responses, guiding social media efforts, and more.

In this role, I provided communications counsel and tactical support to the executive leadership of CSB, across all channels and audiences. I worked closely with the Americas regional leaders (responsibilities for US, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil) as well as the global division leaders on both internal and external communications. One of my special assignments was to work on the start-up team for a new green-field plant; over two years, I partnered very closely with the plant leader and his team to help them lay the foundation for the culture they wanted to develop in the plant, as well as manage messaging about the start-up's progress to executive stakeholders and the local media.I worked closely with another plant’s leadership during an regulatory change and associated environmental permitting processes. This required significant outreach to the local community, media, and government to provide clear, accessible communications about a very nuanced scientific matter, and diligence in correcting misinformation and misrepresentation tactfully.Recurring work in this role included speech writing for executives (for trade shows, media events, and internal events), editing marketing and technical documents, responding to media inquiries and preparing press statements, and driving content for social media channels and the intranet.

I led a team of 16 communications professionals providing strategic internal communications counsel and deliverables to senior executives in all business and support areas, including P&L divisions and HR. As this was during the housing crisis -- when the company was frequently in the news and employees were dealing with significant, constant turmoil -- it was a challenging time to be responsible for employee communications. As the complexity of our situation (from the employees' point of view) increased, my role evolved to directing enterprise communications, which included development of messages to all employees, oversight of the strategy and use of enterprise-wide internal communications channels and deliverables, including the intranet, videos, and employee events channels. I worked directly with the executive team during a CEO transition, and worked closely with the new CEO to launch, maintain, and evangelize his internal blog.

I was a vocal advocate for user experience principles and enjoyed developing and leading a mid-career team of usability, analytics, and web design professionals. I was responsible for the overall online experience as it related to communications and public relations goals, and for setting the direction and strategy for our sites, nascent social media channels, and mobile development. I am particularly proud of the work we did to establish a formalized web analytics discipline, using metrics to drive content decisions and prioritization, and open the door for productive strategy discussions. I was able to improve our website user satisfaction score for B2B content by 10% by reorganizing information architecture based on site analysis, best practices, and user testing, and changing the treatment of marketing content.

In my role at this medical professional liability insurance provider, serving 4,600 physician clients, I managed a small team through some very large projects. For instance, I led year-long effort to transform the existing brochure-ware site into a secure, interactive customer and sales-force website, including developing requirements, creating the project plan, coordinating work flow and vendors, managing the $50K project, and briefing senior management on progress. I spearheaded the effort to digitize all policy documents and created a workflow that made it possible to connect the digital files to individual web accounts, and then directed the rollout to policyholders and the launch of the site. Another significant project was an effort to redefine the company's brand statement and positioning. I led staff involvement for 107 employees of all levels, chaired two employee committees, and served as point person for the project. I then led the implementation committee and oversaw the new advertsing campaign based on the clarified brand positioning.

I was hired as contract webmaster for the FAA Office of System Architecture and Investment Analysis (ASD), promoted to section lead and then to team lead. My team was a small communications team on a large technical contract, so our skills were in demand both for the client and for the contract.The central challenge of this position was to find clear, compelling ways to describe and explain a technical subject -- the modernization of the national airspace system and related technology efforts.

In this role, I shaped BIO's web presence and advised executive staff on internet developments. I prepared and managed budget for the web and related projects, managed contracts with web-related vendors and advertisers, and designed and coded the website.I created a database-backed conference registration function for the website, which significantly reduced staff time spent on manually registering association members -- and gave me some great learning experience with relational databases and dynamic coding. This was part of a larger project to redesign the entire website, with hands-on responsibility for design, coding, and maintenance.
