I am a journalist and columnist exploring how regional journalism can help folks improve their environment. I also look at the importance of culture as it relates to identifying regions. I currently serve as executive director of the Alabama Initiative for Independent Journalism and as executive editor of its online news organization, BirminghamWatch.I've previously served in various roles at the MuckRock Foundation and as project editor for Broke in Philly: a reporting collaborative project of Resolve Philly on economic mobility. I've also written about revitalization efforts in cities and the ongoing digital revolution and contributed to a regular column about diversity in journalism for The Poynter Institute. I've reported and managed digital strategy for NPR member station WBHM and performed similar duties for the Southern Education Desk, a multistate, Corporation for Public Broadcasting-funded local journalism collaborative. I was one of the organizers for #wjchat, a weekly online chat about digital journalism, for most of its 7+ year run. I started an online publication about Birmingham and its progress, The Terminal, in 2007.I write, speak, and consult on these issues whenever possible. I lead discussions about the state of community journalism. I'm most interested in examining how we deliver it instead of reinventing it. If you have any story ideas, email me at andre@birminghamwatch.org or text (205) 276-6585.
