About Alejandro Corvalán
I hold medical doctor degrees from Universidad de Chile, Chile, and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), USA, and a master in science degree in cell biology from Universidad de Chile. I have worked as a pathologist at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, NY, USA, and as a postdoctoral research fellow in molecular pathology and virology at Tokyo Medical and Dental School and Kagoshima University in Japan. I am a Full Professor and Principal Investigator at the Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS) at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. My academic activities include translational research in oncology as well as postgraduate education. My research focuses on the interactions between coding and non-coding genes (microRNA and long non-coding RNA) in gastric cancer. I am particularly interested in the molecular basis of precancerous gastric lesions and hereditary and EBV subtypes of this neoplasm. My research discoveries have contributed to the understanding of the pathogenesis of gastric cancer and have also served as potential biomarkers for non-invasive detection of this neoplasm.Specialties: Translational Cancer Research
Listed skills include Cancer, Cell, Translational Research, Biomarkers, and 6 others.

CurrentChronic diseases (CDs) such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer are the leading causes of global mortality. Their incidence is increasing with longevity and their burden is rising disproportionately among lower income countries. In this Advanced Center for Chronic Diseases (ACCDiS),we propose to develop a population based study to observe and evaluate the natural history of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and cancer in a specific region of Chile with an higher than average burden of CDs. We will focus on the identification of specific causes of chronic inflammation, describe the basic mechanisms that lead to tissue damage and propose measures for prevention, early detection and appropriate treatment. To achieve this ambitious goal ACCDiS brings together scientists investigating CDs at three different levels, involving epidemiological, clinical and basic research. The basic science core groups will focus on the study of cell signaling events associated with the genesis and progression of these diseases, as well as the application of such insight to the development of possible clinical and public health applications through the use of nanotechnology. Our clinical core groups seek to translate mechanistic insights obtained in the basic core to the clinic, while our epidemiological core will provide the individual and environmental data necessary to interpret findings, to develop new working hypotheses and propose areas of intervention. ACCDiS brings together, in a collaborative and coordinated manner, six specific areas of expertise centered around a population-based cohort study (Maule Cohort) that will eventually include 10,000 people http://www.accdis.cl/
